I acknowledge therapy’s inaccessibility due to its cost for many. While taking insurance increases therapy’s accessibility for those who have a particular insurance, it also requires that I diagnose (and pathologize) individuals when they experience “normal” or reasonable feelings and reactions to life’s events and the culture and systems in which we live. And it means that you’ll have a record of having been diagnosed with some type of “illness” because insurance won’t cover sessions otherwise. Having a diagnosis may impact you outside health insurance; for example, it may impact your ability to seek other types of insurance—like life insurance or insurance for long-term care. If you wish to take insurance or submit a superbill, we’ll speak in more detail about potential implications this may have for you.
